A bit of a challenge

Sandy Hollow Golf Course

Sandy Hollow Golf Course was the best public course in Rockford before Aldeen was opened.

As second best, it is still a very, very nice course, beautifully maintained with many interesting design features. It shows it's age when it comes to the layout with many straighforward holes, but that doesn't deter from the enjoyment of playing the course.  At 6228 yds from the club tees it is not too long, so anyone can enjoy this course. With lots of mature trees lining the fairways, straight is more important than long. Friendly staff are found everywhere, and at $23, it is quite a bargain.

The clubhouse is typical muni style, simple but functional. Not to be missed is Linda Tracy's Pro Shop and Concessions. Linda has been at the course for almost 40 years, and she aims to be there 50! Ask her if she has any good stories to tell. Be prepared though, you might be there for a while. Also check out her golf ball collection. She designs a new ball every year for the anniversary.

18 hole course

Sandy Hollow is quite different from it's sibling Ingersoll.

There are quite a few difficult holes, including number one, a long par 4. The tee shot is downhill, followed by a long uphill approach shot. If you make par here you're off to a good start.

The greens are pretty fast, and somewhat undulated, although mostly they are just leaning one way or the other, pretty tricky to read.

As at Ingersoll, there are many many trees in play. Soon there will be fewer though, since the ash trees have been attacked by an insect, and will have to be removed, to the delight of some club members. Who hasn't had a tree somewhere they wish to have removed. However, there are so many trees that removing a few hundred will hardly be noticable. And some will be replaced by other varietys.

There are quite a few highlights to mention. Tricky is number nine, a par five going back to the clubhouse with a blind tee shot. Several of the par threes are also quite long.
