Set on a 600-acre peninsula between Lower Lough Erne and Castle Hume Lough, Lough Erne is an upscale resort that has hosted the G8 meetings and the Irish Open Championship.

Since its opening in 2009 with Nick Faldo’s first Irish course, the five-star Lough Erne Resort has had an eventful existence. It was initially announced with fanfare that the young phenom Rory McIlroy would be the club’s touring professional. The resort, which has two 18-hole courses, hit on hard times after the financial crisis, and its holding company, Castle Hume Leisure, was placed in administration in 2011. Two years later the resort welcomed the high-security G8 meetings, which were held in Northern Ireland for the first time. Barack Obama probably wished he could have spent the days on the golf course instead of inside the hotel negotiating with Merkel and Putin. The Faldo Course is situated prettily on the peninsula between the Castle Hume Lough and the Lower Lough Erne. The resort won the Northern Ireland Tourism Board’s ‘Hotel of the Year’ award in 2014, and in 2015 it was sold to an American investment group. In 2017 Lough Erne hosted the Irish Open.
